I've recently returned from Mayo Clinic in MN. I have a Quality and Compliance background and was told how great this facility was and "on top of research". Let me tell you from my personal experience...do not believe it, as a matter of fact, I learned more of what they do not know and it was pretty scary. Mayo is just like every other business, all about the bottom line. Push patients through, run more test (without explanation) and lack of customer care, thus resulting in just being another number and making the $$$. The bureaucratic system is worse than most fortune 500 companies and U.S. Govt. They should hire a consultant to conduct 6 sigma and train their employees on how to treat patients with dignity and respect, listen to their needs and stop running unncessary test without any just cause and not to treat us as though we are ignorate. I had sent all my films and records to their office a week before my appointment and even verbally asked them the day before, on the day of my appointment if they have reviewed my records and films. You would not believe how many different stories I got.... (I will look at them, too busy right now, I don't have them, we never received them, Oh...we found them,...they are being reviewed, oh no we can't find them and on and on), I actually had these tracked via my local hospital and UPS, verifying they got them. The proves how unorganized and unethical in lying about their lack of competencies. This was enough to drive any sane person insane. I feel bad for folks who don't know how to challenge the system and stand their ground and debate with this arrogant attitude they display. My doctor literally told me he did not know what to do, so he continued to order tests, when I asked for clarification, he became hostile and rude and had me in tears. I refused any further testing until they read my current ones. I even elevated this to the patient care coordinator on the floor and main office, and so much to elevate it to the office of ethics and compliance. The amount of stress this caused, made my health worse then when I arrived. It wasn't until over of week of arguing and defending my rights as a patient to get another doctor, as they told me "tough, you have to stay with the same physician". So, I support the belief that this clinic is too arrogant for the good of their patients and do not stand behind doing the right thing within reasonable time. Having patients traveling back and forth over weeks demonstates lack of good business practice.
Overall, this organization, isn't about following their mission statement " to provide the finest care possible ", it is about making you feel in-human and intentionally creating communication breakdown so you believe your wrong and making as much money to support their research that benefits the wealthy, not the common everyday hard working person and bottom line, not getting the proper quality health care they preach upon.
My recommendation, do your research and homework and go somewhere more local. Look at the website and where most of these folks graduated from. Maybe checkout Northwestern University in Chicago..... I would never recommend this Clinic to anyone, not even my worse enemy. Finally, if you have ever been there, ever wonder why they have so many legal offices inside the building and outside and don't believe for one minute that their patient coordinators are there to help you...they are to prevent any lawsuits against the company, so your words are against the doctors or other staff and who do you think they are going to believe, so my advise is document every step, who you talk to, time and what they say and make sure you have someone else in the room with you. Pick up a Patients Rights brochure on your way into the clinic and read it carefully, if you make the mistake of seeking questionable healthcare advise !!!!

Everyone needs to know that the Mayo Clinic abandons patient care. It abandoned my care. I was told by a Minneapolis medical malpractice attorney "you're not the first to be abandoned by Mayo." Even the supervisor of Mayo Clinic's Office of Patient Affairs said to me it abandons (although the word used was "terminate") care of its patients. To decent physicians patient abandonment is unethical, unprofessional, and unbelievable.
My care was abandoned the day before I was to begin radiation for my breast cancer. Mayo performed the mastectomy and had given me eight rounds of chemo while expanding my breast tissue expander. Then, the day before I was to begin radiation the Office of Patient Affairs called, and said "don't come, we will not provide you with medical care." I was stunned. I was told I was "unhappy" with the care I was receiving. Yes, I was unhappy and thought someone at this suppossedly quality institution could help me. When I received the certified letter a few days later, it read I was "antagonistic" toward staff.
Antagonisitic? Well, I certainly questioned my plastic surgeon, his colleagues and staff about why my breast had become so distorted, and more importantly, how he was going to be fix my breast. I wouldn't accept explanations like "everything went well" or "things are normal" or "this is what sometimes happens." OK, so my breast looks terrible right now, but how will you fix it? No one could explain to me what would be done because, as I strongly believe, no one knew what to do, or didn't want to get involved. So get rid of the patient instead.
Please be careful finding quality medical care.

Try JAY Clinic. It's fairly new. I think you will be pleasantly suprised by the quality of care and the laid back environment, not to mention the reasonable prices, especially for lab work. The phone number is in the book and they have a web site www.thejayclinic.com.

You people need to quit your whining! If you weren't happy, you should have gone elsewhere. But to stay and continue to put up with, "perceived incompetence", only shows your lack of common sense!
As for the lady with the breast surgery, some people don't heal as well as other people and to blatantly badger staff with the same question is unacceptable on your part. Grow up, life sucks, and yes we all age. It is too bad that employees didn't kiss your bottom as you saw fit. This is one time I am pleased to see Mayo take a stand.

People are referred to Mayo and think they will get quality care. Those who have something that is easily diagnosed are likely to be happy, those with issues that require testing will be dropped. As soon as you realize that they are not going to do anything but tell you that you are screwed in the head, you leave a get quality care from someone else not affiliated with this sorry institution.

You've really got to hand it to the Mayo Clinic's P.R. people though. Lots of people think the Mayo is the cat's whiskers. However, they can't keep covering their mess up forever, basically, the Mayo has shafted too many patients and employees and it's catching up with them. Go and have a look at: www.mayovictim.com

We are all TRUSTING people, especially of Mayo doctors, and to find DOCUMENTED & FACTUAL medical records that completely contradict everything we were verbally told to our face - is NOT acceptable.
WHAT WOULD YOU THINK if you were told in a Mayo Clinic ER you were in an advanced stage of kidney cancer that had spread to my lymph nodes and lungs. Then see "PRESSUMED TRANSITIONAL CANCER" and only "RENAL MASS" on your medical records.
Remember, the facts are:
I have no left kidney and all associated parts.
I am NOT A CANCER SURVIVOR nor do I have CANCER NOW.
BUT, I am a SURVIVOR of Septic shock, organ and resp failure, spent 20+ days on life support/ventalator 3 months in Mayo. Then rec'd registered letter refusing to treat me as of 4/30/2010, because I ask questions and wanted to understand al that had happened to me. Well this is the only Dr we were allowed to see from Urology.
Please excuse the background noise, and my tone. I think anyone hearing what I heard would be upset an mad. I really need to share my experience so your are NOT THE NEXT VICTIM. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE FOR ANY PATIENT TO BE TOLD - We need to speak up. Michael & Georjean Parrish

THIS IS A CAUSE I will whole heartedly support and will continue to fight for until it is passed. Sorry, but after my experience, my eyes are wide open, and I really can’t believe we have a few doctors that are intentionally deceiving patients.
I have stated on my FB page, FB notes, grjnparrish worldwide press blog and numerous entries on Mayo Clinic FB wall and discussion page.
This is a RIGHT for all patients and from my recent experience a MUST. Who would ever think a Doctor/doctors would tell you an intentional LIE to your face and minutes later write something completely different in you records. I would never in this lifetime believe what happened to me has most likely happened to many others.
My other cause is to get legislation that REQUIRES every surgical permission form HAS the DIAGNOSIS and SPECIFIC reasons for the surgery. I will never let another person hear the words, “ You gave us permission for the surgery” and I state “Yes, but we were told I had a very advanced stage of a rare kidney cancer, that had spread to my Lungs and lymph nodes, and needed immediate surgery”. The doctor, also made this statement to my husband and I, “I’m so sorry, this is the worst part of my job, to have to share this information with you”.
There also need to be protection for the patient from retaliation by providers: such as, sending threatening letters and refusing to treat.
If nothing was happening, why would a head doctor from oncology (hematology, oncology and transplantation, per title on the facility’s website) run to the internal legal dept immediately after a conversation with a patient.
I have the recorded copy of this conversation and he only identified himself as a head doctor from oncology. And it seemed to touch a nerve when I asked why would there ever was any reference to TRANSPLANT in my file, and for over a year to be denied the opportunity to ever discus with my surgeon or original doctors. This meeting is what triggered the 1st of many registered letters, firmly directing me to ask NO MORE QUESTIONS, and then notification of refusal to treat as of 4/30/2010., find a new doctor.
My original doctors were Shane Dailey, Erik Castle, Dr Ferrigni all of Mayo Urology.
MY 40 lbs of medical records and 6 dvds of radiological records are available to anyone that would like a copy to see for yourself.
All my medical condition issues have came from the original verbally communicated diag of Transitional Cell Carcinoma of the kidney, which seems to keep changing and has also been referred to as Transitional Cell Carcinoma of the renal pelvis and cancer of the mucosa, by the doctor we where sent to related to our questions.
BUT, somehow I find out in my medical records I NEVER saw an oncologist, and they are telling me I DO NOT have CANCER and not a CANCER SURVIVOR, just a septic Shock miracle survivor, because a highly experienced doctor inadvertently punctured my intestines.
I finally, do know with out a doubt I survived for a PURPOSE: to take an active part in preventing this from happening to another person, and this is the path I shall follow.
Sincerly,
Georjean

I am a Quality Assurance Consultant and was just there in September, 2011.
I agree with you. After asking for a list of possible root causes and the planned tests to confirn or deny root cause, they terminnated their services to me. I am about to reply to their CEO, DR. Noseworthy. Until the medical profession loses its arrogance, they will never achieve the performance levels private companies attain. They have no fear of losing their jobs.
